Western hair can start acting very differently when it has to relocate to a tropical climate like Singapore for a couple of years. I think that you will find that the humidity will play havoc with your hair.
Expect your hair to change. Maybe to such an extent that you will have to look at making changes to your present hairstyle even though it served you very well at home.
To help re-assure you that what your hair is going through is quite normal and not to worry about it too much here is a little of what to expect.
You Thought Your Hair Was Straight.
For years you have been living in a moderate climate used to the idea that you had straight hair.
Then within a few months of residing in the tropics you suddenly find your hair has waves or you may even find curls starting to appear.
This happens to a lot of women so don’t be alarmed.
The biggest nightmare of all women but especially for western hair is when the frizz starts to appear.
Know why this is happening to your hair and the best ways to control it here.
If your hair happens to be dry or over processed due to a lot of chemical procedures. Your hair cuticles will be lifted so allowing the moisture to easily leave your hair.
You will generally find that your very fine hairs around the hairline tend to be very partial to the frizzes. This is all part of your Singapore experience.
To help over come the frizzy hair syndrome ensure that you do keep your hair well-nourished.
Always use a conditioner when you shampoo and treat your hair to a hair mask or deep treatment.
Either at home or in your hair salon on a weekly basis. As this will help to keep your hair moisturized.
In fact I have found that some of my clients found it best best to change their haircut or hairstyle.
To a look that works with their new wave or curl. Doing this made their life easier than trying to fight their hairs change of appearance.
Blow Dry Won’t Last On Western Hair.
At home you would maybe blow-dry your hair once or twice a week and it would hold its style and look good for a couple of days.
Here in Singapore with the high humidity you will probably feel that you need to wash your hair every day.
If you happen to be an outdoor girl who participates in sports that could even mean washing your hair twice a day.
To make matters worse that beautiful blow-dry that you spent 30 minutes working on. Will now tend to only last a few hours.
Maybe even less if you spend time walking around in the humid outdoors.
To ensure that your blow dry looks good when going out for the evening. You will find yourself never daring to venture out of an air conditioned environment until you eventually arrive at the venue.
Just in case your hair happens to flop before you get there.
I have found that for western hair to survive well in Singapore it’s best to think about a hair style that will look great blow-dried. But also look good when finger dried quickly or just left to air dry.
In this weather your cut counts. Relying only on a blow dry to give you your look will eventually only frustrate you.
Horror’s Your Hair Is Shedding Far More.
You may find that after a few months of being here in Singapore that your hair may start shedding at an alarming rate.
A lot of women do. Check with your friends who have lived here a while.
This can be very alarming. But remember your body will take time to adjust.
With a combination of your body adjusting to the new climate as well perhaps a change in your diet.
All that delicious new food to try at the local hawker stalls.
Put these two big changes along with the major stress of moving house as well as country’s.
You can see there can be a few major contributors to your dropping hair.
People say moving house is one of the most stressful things to do and you have just moved house and country’s so how stressful is that.
After a short while you should find that your hair will slow down on its shedding to the natural fall of 60 to 150 hairs a day.
Western Hair Color In Singapore.
Hair and nails tend to grow much faster in a humid tropical climate. So don’t be surprised if you find that a root touch up is required one or two weeks earlier than you were accustomed to back home.
Hair color will also fade faster due to the sun rays being far stronger than you are used to and nine out of ten you will be spending a lot more time in the swimming pool or at the beach.
The tap water also contains chlorine which has a mild bleaching effect that will slowly lighten your hair color.
A big help to avoid this happening is to think of attaching a filter to your shower.
I find that a lot of people do attach a filter to their kitchen tap but tend to forget to put one on the shower.
Change Of Hair Care Habits For Western Hair.
It is true Western hair is affected far more by the environment and by pool and sea water than most Asian hair.
This is due to the fact that it has fewer layers of the cuticle (the hairs protective layer) than Asian hair.
Tip 1. Take more precautions to protect your hair by using a protective spray when you blow dry or use heated appliances.
Tip 2.When spending a lot of time at the beach or swimming pool protect your hair especially if you have color.
Before venturing out or jumping into the pool or sea. Run a little of your favorite hair oil or conditioner through your locks for protection.
Tip 3.Weekly put on a deep conditioner to counteract the dryness caused to your hair from the sun and swimming.
Many things can affect the western hair and how it re- acts but changing climates can be one of the biggest.
