What exactly are hair toners and should you be using one? Toners are perfect for many colors from blondes to brunettes to reds and auburn’s. In the salon your stylist may use one on your hair but forget to inform you as to why and how to keep up the effect at home.
If you happen have blonde hair you most probably do have a toner applied. Because they do play an important role in attaining your desired blonde hair color be it cool or warm.
The same also if you have a strong vivid hair color. Because toners help to keep that strong vivid color stay looking fresh. For as long as possible in your hair.
What Exactly Are Hair Toners.
Think of a hair toner as a semi or demi permanent way of adding pigment to your hair that will not leave any demarcation line. Because they do not penetrate deeply into your hair they will slowly fade away.
Professional demi colors, hair glosses and colored shampoos or conditioners that you use at home can all be looked at as a form of toner. With some being stronger and more longer lasting than others.
The Two Uses Of Hair Toners.
1. To increase the intensity of a color in your hair.
2. To neutralize any unwanted pigments. Such as orange and yellow tones in blonde and grey hair.
The Shine Factor.
Toners as in hair glosses or demi colors create a smooth cuticle which in turn gives your hair a nice shine.
The Application.
The hair toner is applied to your damp hair and takes about 20 minutes to process.
This product will not lighten your hair or permanently alter the color of it.
How Long Will They Last?
Roughly from two to six weeks. Because this will depend a lot on firstly the porosity of your hair and secondly on how often you wash your hair.

Which Hair Benefits From A Hair Toner?
Blonde Hair – To remove unwanted brassy tones from very light hair. Or to add interesting fashion tones like a light pink or rose gold color.
Grey Hair – Your white hairs can slowly yellow over time. A cool toner will help to give your hair a more silvery look.
Red Hair – Pigments in permanently colored red hair often fade very quickly. The use of a hair toner can restore the vivid shiny look to your red hair.
Brunette Hair – The correct toner will add more richness and depth to your hair color.
Highlighted Hair – Whether you have highlights or a balayage look on your hair. The use of a hair toner will create a more natural blend giving your hair color a more subtle look.
Pastel Hair – Hair toners create all the rainbow effects achieved on pastel hair.
Vivid Hair Colors – All wild hair colors start off bright and bold unfortunately some shades do fade rather fast. The use of a toner can be a great way of giving the color a new lease of life.
Bleached Hair And The Use Of a Toner.
When your hair is bleached it is for the sole purpose of taking color or your hair pigment out from your hair.
Bleach does not put a color in.
Putting the color into your hair is the job of the hair toners.
And are often used to pre tone your bleached hair so as to get the right base before adding bright colors.
Or as a toner full stop. By using a cool tone to produce an ash or silvery finish or a warm tone to create a coppery feel.

3 Tips To Help Your Toned Hair Last Longer.
Tip 1. To help prolong the length that your hair keeps its toned effect use a shampoo, conditioner or mask with a toner in the product. Because these will help to deposit more of the pigment needed to refresh your hair each time you wash it.
Admittedly these home care products are not as strong as the hair toner you had applied to your hair in the salon. But used a couple of times a week they certainly will help to keep your hair tip top.
Colors are available in most shades from a rich red to coppers and mahogany’s. Which when used will emphasis the tones in your hair and help slow down the color fading process.
As well as the well known blues and purples which are used to take away any brassiness in blonde hair.
The purple pigments in shampoos or conditioners will neutralize any unwanted yellow pigments. Whist the products that contain a blue pigment will help to cancel out any orange tones.
Tip 2. Do limit your hairs exposure to the sun because the rays will fade your hair toner faster. So if you are intending to spend long periods in the sun do cover your hair with a hat.
Tip 3. Washing your hair to often will also quicken up the fading of your toned hair. I recommend no more than three times a week and for the days in between use a dry shampoo if needed.
