Have you ever considered using hair glossing treatments when your hair looks a little dull and you wish you could add a great reflective shine to it?
Glossing treatments can be a great way to give your hair the vibrancy you need. They help to refresh tone and add a super glossy varnish like effect to your hair. Be it chemically colored or your own natural tone.
I am sure that you will have read about the mirror hair effect that Hollywood loves. Or seen pictures of very shiny heads of hair on Instagram, Pinterest or in a magazine.
And hair glossing has played a major part in this mirror look.
How Your Hair Can Loose It’s Shine.
The main reason your hair can become dull and lacking shine is because it unable to retain the moisture it requires. And this is due to your hair’s cuticle being roughed up or open which allows moisture to escape. Rather than locking in the moisture by being tightly closed.
When a surface is smooth all the light rays that hit that surface can reflect evenly resulting in a shiny finish
Whereas on an uneven surface the light rays will get deflected resulting in a more matt or dull finish.
7 Reasons Your Hair Cuticle Maybe Open
- Swimming frequently in chlorinated or sea water.
- Spending a lot of time in the sun without a hat.
- Washing hair to often with strong sulfate shampoos.
- Chemical damage from over processing of color, perms or straighteners.
- Heat damage from blow drying and styling tools
- Not working moisturizing products into your hair care regime.
Hair Glossing Treatments Will Add A Reflective Shine.
Hair glossing treatments work by adding a reflective shine to your hair as they tend to be acidic in nature. This means that the glossing treatment will tightly close your hairs cuticle.
And when your hair cuticle is closed the surface of your hair is smooth and so more light rays will be reflected back off your hair. Thus making your hair look shiny and vibrant.
So if you love your hairs natural color having a clear or translucent gloss applied will add shine and help to enhance all your hairs natural tones.
Whilst hair glossing treatments with a pigment mix will bring your colored hair to life. By refreshing any fade that may be in the mid lengths or ends of your hair.
What Are Hair Glossing Treatments?
The best way to think of hair glossing treatments is to imagine them as a varnish or topcoat for your hair. Because they work by coating your hair cuticle – outside layer of your hair.
Hair glossing treatments are demi permanents that work to leave your hair soft and shiny.
The molecules of the demi permanent will coat the strands of your hair to enhance the look of your hair color.
They also work to protect your hair as they seal over your hair’s cuticle. Which helps to limit the amount of environmental damage your hair will get from the sun and atmosphere. And as a bonus protection from chemicals such as chlorine which every swimming pool has.
Exactly how much shine your hair will have after a glossing will depend a little on your hairs natural texture. If your hair is straight or fine your hair will definitely look shinier than if your natural texture is wavy or coarse. Because light rays do reflect better off a flat surface.
Hair glossing treatments will last for around 4 to 6 weeks. So the time that you are able to keep the shine in your hair will depend a lot on how often you wash your hair and also how strong a shampoo your use.
That is why I always recommend to my clients to shampoo with a sulphate free shampoo.
The Benefits Of Hair Glossing Treatments On Colored Hair.
I am a big fan and recommend glossing treatments to a lot of my clients who color their hair. And these are the reasons why.
Reason 1. A Hair Glossing Helps Your Hair Color To Last.
By applying a hair gloss after a hair color you are sealing the cuticle. So creating a barrier that will help to lock in the color molecules.
This will help to slow down any color fade as well as add a smoothness and shine to your hair.
Reason 2. Hair Glossing Treatments Are A Great Way To Tone Blonde Hair.
If you have high lights or a very blonde hair color. You will find that over time your hair tends does tend to yellow.
A hair gloss with color pigment can be a great way to correct any yellow tones and give your hair a vibrant look in between those root touch up visits.
Reason 3. Glossing Helps To Refresh Faded Hair Color.
When you have longer colored hair you can find that the lengths and ends of your hair seem to fade faster than the root area. The mid lengths and ends of your hair tend to be more porous. Because of the many years of general wear and tear by being exposed to the sun and environment.
Hair glosses with a pigment mix will help to refresh those faded areas so livening up your whole hair color. Allowing more time in between your root retouches.
Grey Hair And Glossing Treatments.
Hair glossing treatments will give grey hair a new lease of life.
A full head of grey hair can quite often look a little dull. As the hairs lack of natural warm pigments which are red and yellow have gone. And these warm pigments are the ones that reflect the light.
Knowing how to enhance your natural grey hair will give that well cared for look
Like adding a translucent hair gloss to your grey hair. Because this add some shine as well as bring out the different shades within your natural color.
And if you are feeling a little more adventurous you could try a pearl or an ash glossing. As they would add some interest by slightly changing the tones in your hair.
Hair Glossing Treatment Vs Hair Glaze Know The Difference.
A hair gloss and hair glaze are in fact very similar. As they are both temporary treatments that will add a shine to your hair that will slowly fade.
Hair glossing is generally carried out by your hair stylist in the salon. But why not try out a hair glaze at home if you decide to take the plunge I recommend you try the John Frieda clear shine glaze.
Both hair glossing and hair glaze come in a clear translucent form or with added color pigment.
Quite often manufactures and salons will intermix the words when talking about adding a shine to your hair. Because of this it may be difficult for you to know exactly which one to ask for.
So here’s a quick rundown on both products to help you.
There happens to be one a big difference depending on which one of these two products you use on your hair. As to the amount of time that your hair will stay shinny.
A Hair Glaze.
A hair glaze is very temporary as it will only last 1 to 2 weeks on your hair. The reason for such a short life span is because the product does not contain peroxide.
Therefore the glaze simply sits on the top or outer layer of your hair. But this will mean that your mirror shine look will wash away very easily.
Hair Glossing Treatments.
Hair glossing treatments will last much longer around 4 to 6 weeks. Because they do penetrate your hair shaft rather than just sitting on your hairs surface.
The reason for this is that glossing treatments use a very low volume peroxide.
My Final Thoughts.
Everybody notices a shiny head of hair because it looks vibrant and alive. Hair glossing treatments provide that topcoat finish to your hair that produces that vibrant and alive look by creating a great reflection of light.
Perfect for bringing out your hairs natural tones or enhancing any chemical color you may have had. With the added plus of helping to protect your hair from the environment. A great help if you happen to have a frizzy hair issue.
For a glossing especially with added tone I would recommend that you have a chat with your hairstylist. But if you want to try out the temporary glaze yourself you will be find them in your local drug store
