The correct hair extension maintenance is the key to keeping them looking great for the longest time.
You have decided to have hair extensions fitted to provide more length or volume to your hair.
Good quality 100% human hair extensions can be quite costly depending upon how many you require to achieve the result that you want.
This means that you are making an investment in yourself.
But how do you get the most out of this investment.
In this post you will find advise on how to keep your extensions in excellent condition.
So that they will last you for many months.
Regular Check Ups Are Important.
If you have had your extensions fitted by a professional. They will normally offer a 6 weekly maintenance checkup.
At the salon I offer this free to my Great Lengths hair extension clients.
As they have made an investment that if maintained well is good for them and for me.
During this hair extension maintenance checkup with your stylist.
They will make sure that you are maintaining them correctly and that there are no tangles.
If there are any problems advice can be given on how to overcome the problem.
Whilst any dropped extensions can be replaced.
Keep Your Hair Extensions Healthy.
A little bit of dedication is needed to take care of your hair extensions.
Do shampoo and condition them frequently.
And if you are using extensions that have a keratin bond.
Always use a gentle shampoo which is free from silicones and sulphates.
Because if these are present in the shampoo. They will loosen the bonds.
Added Moisture Helps Maintain Hair Extensions.
As your extensions are not attached to your scalp.
Your hairs natural sebum will not keep the extensions nourished.
Sebum is produced by your sebaceous glands and is composed of fatty acids.
It is your body’s natural way of lubricating your hair and skin.
Therefore for your hair extension maintenance substitute this by using a hair mask every couple of weeks.
Because this will ensure that the extension hair is getting nourished.
But do be careful not to apply this on the area where your bonds are.
Brushing Often An Important Part Of Hair Extension Maintenance.
For brushing your extended hair use a brush made especially for hair extensions.
Or if you can’t get hold of one. Only use a soft padded bristle brush.
Because these will glide through your hair easier.
Gently removing any tangles that you may have.
Brush through the hair section by section.
Firstly gently hold the area where the bonds are attached.
Then start brushing from the ends of the hair upwards towards the root area.
Before finally letting go of the bonded area and brushing from the root area down.
Before moving on to the next section.
By brushing your hair extensions section by section and in the way described above.
You will not be putting too much tension on your hair root area.
One final reminder.
Never use a brush on your extensions when they are wet.
Because this could and probably will cause breakage.
Hair Extension Maintinance Separate The Bonds Daily.
This will only take you a couple of minutes of your time.
But is worth doing.
Just use your fingers to feel each bond and check that none have started to become tangled.
If they have. Try to gently separate them.
By doing this daily.
You will help to stop the extensions from becoming matted with any loose or shedding hair.
Should you have difficulty with separating bonds that have become tangled.
I am sure the technician that attached them for you would be willing to help you.
Hair Extension Care When Going For A Swim.
Swimming in the pool or sea with hair extensions is no problem.
As if you have real hair extensions the hair can be treated just like your real hair.
It is the bonds that will need extra care.
When you get out of the water yet intend going back in again.
Part of your hair extension maintenance should be.
To use your towel to pat dry your hair lengths.
But concentrate on drying the bond area as much as possible.
In fact if you’re near your room even better still pop back for five minutes.
To dry the bond quickly with a hair dryer.
You can then let the rest of the hair air dry.
If you happen to have finished your swimming routine or dip in the sea.
Wash your hair to remove any salt or chlorinated water from the hair.
Because if the salt or chlorine water stays on the bonded area for a long period of time.
It will weaken the bond attachment.
The Best Way To Shampoo Hair Extensions.
Shampooing the right way to help maintain hair extensions for a longer period.
The first thing to remember is that suddenly you have a lot more hair.
Which means a longer time under the shower when it comes to rinsing your hair.
If you can. Using a shampoo product designed by the extension company is best.
If there is not one available always use a shampoo that is silicon and sulphate free.
Because these are gentler on your hair and on the bonds.
When shampooing.
To wet your hair tilt your head slightly back.
So that the water can run down through the length of your hair.
Apply your shampoo and lather gently from roots to tips.
Use your fingertips to massage your scalp area and then rub down the lengths of the hair.
It is important that you do not use a scrubbing motion when washing.
As this will ensure that your hair stays tangle free.
Upon rinsing tilt your head once again slightly back.
Finish by applying a hair mask or conditioner.
But only on the hair not on the root area near the bonds.
How To Maintain Your Extensions When Sleeping.
If you have added extensions to your long hair to add volume. Or to add length to your natural hair.
It is best to tie your hair back before going to bed.
The reason for doing this is that we tend to move around when asleep.
Which means that our head keeps moving around on the pillow.
Because of this you can find that your hair extensions can become knotted.
So giving you more work in the morning brushing the knots out.
I recommend tying your hair back loosely in a ponytail using a silk scrunchie.
Or if you fancy a beachy wave look the next day.
A loose French braid is a great way to prevent your extensions tangling.
My Final Thoughts.
Adding some volume or length to your hair in the form of real hair extensions
Will not come cheap if they have been ethically sourced.
Because they are of high quality which will blend perfectly with your own hair.
Having a tangle free life whilst wearing them.
Means following the right tips on hair extension maintinance so that you can prolong their lifespan.
Knowing how to brush shampoo and moisturize them the correct way.
Will ensure that you enjoy your extra length or volume.
