Hair Color TLC is about knowing the right way to preserve and care for your hair color until your next salon visit.
You have colored your hair, you look in the salon mirror at your new hair color, it’s shiny and the color has a nice tone and it looks vibrant.
To help in keeping that look it’s important to remember that two of the main aspects to your color fading are HEAT and WATER.
HAIR COLOR TLC. REDUCE THE IMPACT OF HEAT & WATER.
No 1. Do not wash your hair for 48 hours after you have had your hair colored as this will allow the cuticle of the hair to settle back down onto the hair shaft and lock in the color pigments
No 2. Shampooing your hair is one of the main factors of color fade as colored hair becomes more porous. Therefore the hair absorbs and releases water easily. As the water exits it takes some of your hairs color molecules with it.
No 3. For good hair color TLC reduce this action and shampoo only once each time you wash your hair. This way you will increase the life of your color.
No 4. Turn the temperature down to lukewarm or cool as heat makes the hair color seep out faster. The hotter the water the quicker the fade.
No 5. Mineral deposits inside the water can also increase fade. Or on blonde hair have an effect on the color reflection. Adding a water filter can be a good idea for better hair color TLC.
No 6. Shampoo with a Sulphate free shampoo as Sulphates can be very harsh when trying to care for your hair color. Also stay away from shampoo’s like Baby shampoo. This shampoo has a higher PH than standard shampoo (to prevent eyes from stinging) But the increased alkalinity can remove color quicker from the hair.
No 7. A weekly hair treatment will keep your hair in much better condition as it will help with the flattening of the hairs cuticle. This in turn means that the light rays will get reflected back evenly. In that way your hair color will stay looking more vibrant.
HEAT STYLING YOUR HAIR.
- Remember when styling your hair that blow-drying, flat irons and curling tongs generate a lot of heat. Every time you heat up the hair the cuticle layer tends to open up resulting in loss of pigment. So for hair color TLC try to keep this to a minimum or use a protective spray before commencing.
Once started on a color regime it’s important to commit to a regular touch up for your color. Don’t let faded colors and long roots ruin your look.
