Sebum helps to lubricate your hair and skin as well as protecting you from fungal infections.

Reason 1. Sex Hormones.
Various hormones in your body do and will affect these glands.
Stress can be a big culprit in bringing on a change in your hormone levels.
There is a close link between your body’s production of sebum and your sex hormones.
Hence the reason why a large percentage of people when teenagers do suffer from greasy hair.
An increase of male hormones levels will increase the production of sebum.
Whilst an increase in female sex hormone levels tends slow down the production of sebum.
Reason 2. Skin Conditions.

Skin conditions known as seborrhoeic dermatitis and psoriasis are both associated with excessive sebum production/ greasy hair.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a greasy scaly problem known as oily dandruff. Which in severe cases can lead to a reddening of your scalp.
Oiliness is one of the most common causes of having an itchy scalp.

If mum or dad happened to have greasy hair there is then there is a very good chance that it has been passed on to you.
There may be several other aspects that could be a contributing factor to your oily hair such as diet, pollution and some medications.
6 Ways To Take Control Of Your Greasy Hair.
This will take time so don’t expect immediate results. Be patient and give your hair some time.
No 1. Brush Your Greasy Hair Less.
Hide your hair brush and start using a wide toothed comb instead.
Brushing your hair will distribute the sebum all the way through your hair from roots to the tips. Try keeping it to a minimum.
A comb will not spread the sebum as much. As the teeth are farther apart than the bristles on most brushes.
No 2. Stop Touching Your Greasy Hair.
I know if you have long hair it’s so easy to twiddle your finger around your hair or keep running your hands through the length of it.
But try and stop yourself from doing this to often as finger contact does conjure up oils.
No 3. Shampoo Less.
Having greasy hair and of course yes you want to wash your hair every day. But for the next month try to extend to once every other day.
Especially if you have long hair as washing every day can tend to dry out the lengths of your hair. Then you will end up with a greasy root area and dry ends.
By extending a day before you shampoo you are trying to slow down the production of sebum. Now this will not happen straight away. It takes time and that is why I suggest you try for a month.
As a band aid to help you through keep a dry shampoo in your bathroom for use on the second morning. To keep your hair looking clean even if it isn’t.
No 4. Turn Down The Water Temperature.
Before you wash your hair turn the temperature of the shower to luke warm. As hot water does stimulate sebum production and you don’t want that.
No 5. Use The Correct Type Of Shampoo For Your Greasy Hair.
Most hair care brands do market products to a specific hair type so choose wisely.
For your regular shampoo to remove the oil use a clear shampoo as these are lighter. Rather than a milky one.

Find a way to de stress as stress does affect more than your mind. It also causes the body to release hormones. An increase in certain hormones will increase your body’s sebum production which can leave you with greasy hair.
