At the salon in Singapore I have found that when people inquire about hair extensions many of the questions they ask are very similar in nature.
I am sure that the same can be said for any country in the world. And understandably so.
As understanding what sort of extensions you are thinking of attaching and knowing what you should expect from them is very important. When it comes to how long they will last? or how you will take care of them?
Because the world of hair extensions can be a minefield for anyone who has not tried them before.
With all the different application techniques around that range from pre bonded to tape ins or plaited. And that is just to name a few.
You then of course have to think about the quality of the hair you want in your hair extensions. Whether you would like it to be it real human remy hair or a mixture of fibre and hair.
Ultimately this will depend on your budget to a certain degree.
Although if you want your extensions to look natural and blend well with your own hair.
You are better off to save up for a little longer and splash out on some high quality ethically sourced real hair extensions. That will be attached to your hair using a quality system.
In the Singapore salon I work with Great Lengths human hair extensions. Therefore depending on the type of application you decide upon. You may find that the answers may differ slightly from some of the frequently asked questions that I have featured below.
Question 1. Will Hair Extensions Damage My Hair?
This is a frequently asked question by women who are considering adding length or volume to their hair by adding hair extensions.
I will therefore answer it in this way.
Coloring your hair causes damage and so does perming or straightening, backcombing, using flat irons and blow drying. Certain precautions should be taken when carrying out these processes to minimize any damage.
The same can be said for the use of hair extensions. Yes, they can cause damage if not attached correctly and maintained properly.
But by choosing a reputable salon that uses only top-quality hair extensions and specially trained extension stylists you will minimize the risk of any hair damage.
As a reputable salon will help in the upkeep and the maintaining of your hair extensions. So that they stay in a tip top condition for their life period.
3 Steps Taken That Will Minimize The Chance Of Any Hair Damage.
Step 1. An in-depth consultation to assess your hair and scalp condition and any treatments you are doing. To attain the sustainability of the hair extensions on your hair.
Step 2. Knowing the ins and outs of how to look after you’re your hair and the hair extensions is essential in keeping your hair in tip top condition.
Step 3.Ensuring that you return to your stylist around every 6 weeks for regular maintenance checkups. Especially so if you have been considering tape in hair extensions due to the fact that they need to be removed and re attached on around 6 to 8 weeeks basis.
For all my hair extension clients in Singapore I have an open-door policy when it comes to their hair extensions.
Should they have any problem or even a small knot that they cannot untangle I recommend booking in to see me straight away for a maintenance check over.
High quality extensions are not cheap and to look at their best they need to be well maintained.

Question 2. Is It Difficult To Remove the Extensions?
Hair extensions should be removed by a professional not by yourself at home.
Top quality extensions such as Great Lengths have patented joining points. That are removed by your trained stylist using soft solvents along with certain techniques.
Which means when carried out properly removal of your extensions. Is simple and easy.
But what can create a problem is if the extensions have not been maintained properly. And matting has occurred near the root area.
Question 3. I Heard That Taking Care Of Hair Extensions Is Difficult?
The first thing is to remember that after having your hair extensions fitted.Whether it is for length or extra volume.
You will suddenly have up to double the amount of hair on your head.
Because of this you will find that in the beginning your hair will take longer to shampoo, blow dry and style.
Apart from that if you have chosen to fit real hair extensions. You will care for them in the same way as you would care for your own hair.
With the exceptions of only using a hairbrush designed especially for hair extensions and the same with certain hair care products.

Question 4. Can I swim With My Hair Extensions?
Yes you can swim, exercise and carry out any other form of activity that you would normally do. If the hair is of a high quality it will react just like your own.
However it is important to remember whether you are swimming in the pool or in the sea to thoroughly rinse your hair afterwards.
Try do this as soon as you can.
Because you want to avoid letting any chemicals or salt particles sit on the connection points of your extensions to long. As these particles can start to weaken the bonds.
Although in all honesty rinsing your hair directly after a swim should be something you do with or without extensions.
As any chemical and salt particles left in your hair for a period will tend to leave your hair feeling rough and dry.
Question 5. Will The Joins Of The Hair Extensions Be Noticeable?
The joins or bonds of your hair extensions will not be noticeable if you choose a high-quality extension. As well as a stylist who is very well trained in the application techniques.
The bonds should be small and the same color as the extension that is being attached. If the extension is blonde so is the bond and if the bond is black so is the hair strand.
This way they will blend seamlessly into your own hair.
How the extensions are placed in your hair is an important factor when it comes to them being undetectable.
As your new extensions must be placed working with your hairs natural growth pattern and hair fall to create a natural look and feel.
If you want to tie your hair up a lot of the time be sure to let your stylist know. So that they can take this into consideration before they start the application.
Question 6. How Long Will Hair Extensions Last?
If you choose to attach high quality pre bonded extensions. You should expect them to last from 4 to 6 months. This will depend on how fast your hair grows and also that you give proper care and attention to them.
Should you choose instead to have tape in extensions expect a 4 to 6 week run before returning to the salon for professional maintenance. Where the tapes will be gently taken out and then re applied.
Question 7. Are Extensions Uncomfortable To Wear?
Hair extensions should never be painful to wear. Some people find that the first night of sleeping may be a little strange. Much like if you have ever tried sleeping with your hair in tight plaits before.
Other than that your extensions should not be uncomfortable at all.
If so it is down to one of these poor application techniques.
- Maybe the extensions have been placed to near your scalp and are pulling at your hair roots.
2. Imperfect sections have been taken to attach the extensions. Which can mean that individual hairs are getting pulled from their natural hair fall.
3. The amount of your hair taken to attach the extension is not the same size as the bond size being attached. Which could make your individual hair extension feel heavy.
My Closing Thoughts.
As I first mentioned the world of hair extensions can be a minefield for someone who has never had them before. Due to there are many different techniques and various qualities of hair in the marketplace.
Hair extensions do not need to damage your hair anymore than a hair color would. If you choose a well-trained stylist that uses a high-quality application system and offers to help you in the maintaining of your extensions.
When shopping for hair extensions do make sure that you are offered an in-depth consultation first before you make your decision.
Always do some research on different makes of extensions and take along to the consultation a list of the questions that you wish to ask.
